Fields in Altja were small and sandy just like in other coastal villages, these alone could not feed the people. Sea had to provide something to go with the bread. Fish was catched near the shore, the nets were taken to the sea at nights and brought out in the mornings.

Net sheds were restored in 1973-74 after old photographs taken of the barns and after the memories of the habitants of Altja. The barns were mostly built by the crew of the fishing boat. The crew was made up of men from different families who had to have netting of the same size. Besides drying the nets the barns were also used for keeping fishing tackle.
