Estonian Swedes have inhabited the western part of Estonia and the islands for nearly a thousand years. Living as free peasants owing to their privileges, they managed to preserve a secluded community with persisting peculiar folk culture. World War II put an end to this and made the Estonian Swedes migrate to Sweden. When Estonia regained its independence, the coastal Swedes and their descendents founded a museum with the aim not so much to collect and exhibit old folk culture, but also revive it as much as possible.
